Aloha & Welcome to the home of Maker Surfboards
Maker Surfboards is our family’s craft — built by hand on Maui, Hawaiʻi.
We’re Joey and Tiana Mattos, a husband and wife team, Native Hawaiian, born and raised on Maui. Every board that leaves our shop is shaped and glassed by us from start to finish.
Surfing has always been more than performance to us — it’s connection. To the ocean, to our community, and to the God who created it. Our faith and our island roots shape the way we work — with gratitude, intention, and care in every detail.
Joey shapes boards for the waves we grew up riding — from high-performance shortboards to mid-lengths, retro fishes, and classic logs with a modern edge.
Tiana brings each board to life through resin tints and custom fabric inlays, adding character and individuality to every build.
Every board we make carries both performance and personality — built to be ridden hard, and crafted to last.
Shaper
Function
Thoughtful curves. Clean lines. Performance that serves the rider and responds to the wave.
Glasser
Style
Resin tints, custom fabric inlays, and intentional detail. Expression layered into every board.
why we build the way we do…
The name Maker is singular for a reason.
It points to the One true Maker — the Creator of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in it (Psalm 146:6).
We shape and glass surfboards, but we do so in response to the One who shaped the ocean itself.
Our faith anchors the way we work — with integrity, intention, and gratitude.
“Function and Style” is more than a tagline to us.
Function is the discipline of design — thoughtful curves, clean lines, and performance that serves the rider.
Style is expression — color, texture, and individuality brought to life through glasswork.
Together, they reflect our belief that craftsmanship should carry both purpose and beauty.
We build to honor God, who has given us life, gifts and the waves we ride — seeking to serve our community, and remain faithful in the work placed in our hands.
Longboard models
the chariot
'“Slow down. trim longer. stay on the nose.”
The Chariot is our most traditional longboard—built for smooth glide, easy paddling, and spending more time on the nose. Stable, predictable, and deeply rooted in classic single-fin design, it’s made for surfers who want the pure feeling of traditional noseriding.
A spooned-out concave through the front, mellow entry rocker, and a clean tail kick all work together to create effortless trim, stable tip time and smooth, flowing turns. The Chariot leans fully into classic longboard design—prioritizing timeless feel and style.
Lala log
“ If it came down to one board, this is it..”
The Lala Log is our best all-around longboard. Blending classic single-fin lines with a touch of modern refinement, it’s responsive off the tail, trims effortlessly through the middle, and is an incredibly fun noserider. It’s built to handle just about any longboard wave—from ankle slappers to clean, head-high surf—and feels right at home wherever you paddle it out.
The blended concave under the nose, balanced rocker and a nice roll before the fin all work together to make this board flow rail to rail and feel stable on the nose. If you’re looking for one board that can do a little bit of everything, the Lala Log is it. It’s simply a well-rounded longboard that’s made to put a smile on your face every time you paddle out.
Eleanor
“Built to elevate traditional longboarding and pocket noseriding.”
Eleanor is our refined take on a classic single fin. It blends timeless style with modern performance to create a board that feels lively, responsive, and spunky under your feet. You still get the trim, glide, and noseriding you’d expect from a traditional single fin, with a little extra drive when you step on the tail and beautifully controlled noserides in the pocket.
Eleanor really shines in waves with a little more shape, size, or power, making it a great choice for surfers who want to take their traditional longboarding a step further and sharpen their pocket noseriding. If you love drawing clean lines, locking into the pocket, and surfing with timeless style, the Eleanor is built for you.
Every detail of Eleanor is designed with flow and control in mind. Depending on the surfer and the waves, it can be shaped with either a subtle rolled bottom or a blended nose concave. I also prefer adding a sneaky little edge through the tail, giving the board extra drive through turns and more speed down the line while preserving the smooth, classic feel that defines Eleanor.
Darkhorse
“A noserider that knows how to turn.”
The Darkhorse is a pintail noserider — one of the most overlooked designs in classic surf culture. But those who’ve spent time on a true pintail know the feeling: all the glide and flow of a traditional log, with added control and some of the smoothest turns you’ll find on a longboard.
A blended nose concave, clean rocker line, and subtle edge through the tail give the Dark Horse a lively, responsive feel without losing its classic soul. It excels in smaller surf where its turning ability really shines, but don’t let the pintail fool you—it has the control and confidence to handle head-high and even slightly overhead waves with ease.
If your surfing leans toward smooth carves, clean lines, and responsive rail-to-rail surfing—but you still want the option to step to the nose when the wave invites it—the Dark Horse was built for you.
Seeker
“It’s the board I grab when the waves get too good to log.”
The Seeker is our modern performance single fin, built for surfers who want to bring speed, flow, and responsiveness to quality longboard waves. While its generous outline provides the glide, paddle power, and noseriding you’d expect from a classic single fin, its refined rocker, foil, and rails give it a lively, responsive feel that’s meant to be surfed from the tail.
The Seeker comes alive when the waves have a little more size, shape, and push. It draws clean lines, carries speed effortlessly, and responds instantly when you step back on the tail, all while keeping the smooth glide and timeless feel that make single-fin longboarding so rewarding. If you love surfing with style but want a board that’s ready when the waves turn on, the Seeker was built for you.
hi pro
“When the waves turn on, this board does too.”
The High Pro is our take on a modern high-performance longboard made for absolute shredding. It’s fast, responsive, and built to be surfed hard in waves with shape, size, and power.
This board is all about speed and control through turns. It carries through sections with ease, stays nimble under your feet, and comes alive when you push it. While it has a wide range for a performance longboard, it’s really meant for surfers who want to lean into that classic Hawaiian style of powerful, progressive longboarding.
Alternative Shapes
Dedicated to board designs that are slightly out of the box, may even be completely off the wall. There's one simple mindset that sparked all these designs, and that is FUN!
The Whaler
Fun little egg shape designed for smooth surfing. The key element to this design is its round thumb tail. This tail shape makes for very easy, light footed carves. Perfect for long waves and big open faces.
Diamond
The Diamond. This is the board you grab when you want to step off the long board and ride something faster and looser. The mellow rocker makes for easy paddling and the pulled in swallow creates a very responsive tail for quick turns.
Soap on a rope
Designed for Fast, out of control fun. Rocker is really flat with tons of thickness for crazy float and paddle power. We've opted for the quad trailers just for that extra hold when the waves call for it.
Baloo
Designed for fast, performance surfing in a wide range of wave sizes. If the wave isn't to steep, Baloo will handle waves from hip to well over head. Every design aspect is directed for speed and flow.
Shortboards
When it comes to shortboard design, length, width, and thickness can sometimes not be enough to design a proper shortboard for you. So we’ve chosen to make our custom shortboards tailored through conversation to ensure each design element suites you just right.
