Aloha & Welcome to the home of Maker Surfboards
Maker Surfboards is our family’s craft — built by hand on Maui, Hawaiʻi.
We’re Joey and Tiana Mattos, a husband and wife team, Native Hawaiian, born and raised on Maui. Every board that leaves our shop is shaped and glassed by us from start to finish.
Surfing has always been more than performance to us — it’s connection. To the ocean, to our community, and to the God who created it. Our faith and our island roots shape the way we work — with gratitude, intention, and care in every detail.
Joey shapes boards for the waves we grew up riding — from high-performance shortboards to mid-lengths, retro fishes, and classic logs with a modern edge.
Tiana brings each board to life through resin tints and custom fabric inlays, adding character and individuality to every build.
Every board we make carries both performance and personality — built to be ridden hard, and crafted to last.
Shaper
Function
Thoughtful curves. Clean lines. Performance that serves the rider and responds to the wave.
Glasser
Style
Resin tints, custom fabric inlays, and intentional detail. Expression layered into every board.
why we build the way we do…
The name Maker is singular for a reason.
It points to the One true Maker — the Creator of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in it (Psalm 146:6).
We shape and glass surfboards, but we do so in response to the One who shaped the ocean itself.
Our faith anchors the way we work — with integrity, intention, and gratitude.
“Function and Style” is more than a tagline to us.
Function is the discipline of design — thoughtful curves, clean lines, and performance that serves the rider.
Style is expression — color, texture, and individuality brought to life through glasswork.
Together, they reflect our belief that craftsmanship should carry both purpose and beauty.
We build to honor God, who has given us life, gifts and the waves we ride — seeking to serve our community, and remain faithful in the work placed in our hands.
Longboards
Nose rider/ Single Fin Models
Journeyman
“Our most high performance nose rider.”
The Journeyman is a nose rider that favors better waves with more curve in the face. The major design feature is setting the wide point of the outline behind center, creating wide hips that make turning very snappy especially in waves with more curve. Naturally this pulls the nose outline in slightly more than the Runway Model which lets you hang ten in those punchy more critical sections of the wave. Rails are a nice 50/50 with a blended nose concave. Rocker is long and low thru the entry to an aggressive flip just after the fin.
Runway Model
“Timeless and Classic. The Runway is inspired by the board David Nu’uhiwa rode in ‘67. What I consider the most influential nose rider of all time.”
The Runway Model is a wide stable nose rider perfect for your everyday surf. Complete with 50/50 rails, a blended concave through the nose, a long low rocker with moderate tail kick. This model is purposed for maximum glide and style.
Norma Jean
“Pretty much the easiest board to ride. Floats amazing, paddles like a dream, and nose rides with ease.”
I wanted to make a board with a wide nose that created a nice parallel outline to suit surfers of all levels. For the surfer looking to consistently get to the tip, this board is perfect. It gives you the confidence to get to the nose in one fluid motion.
The main attributes of this board focus on early wave entry and stability for the surfer looking to enhance their classic longboarding style. Complete with 50/50 rails, a blended nose concave, a long low rocker with moderate tail kick this model has a smooth entry line for maximum glide, forgiving and stable cross-stepping.
Grom Log
“Our classic nose riders, scaled down to suit any young grom”
Lady Log
“Specifically designed for the ladies”
Modern High Performance Models
Performer
The Performer features a 2+1 fin configuration with additional rocker, a sleeker outline, and a more tapered responsive rail. The bottom utilizes a concave in the nose for increased lift for nose riding, which transitions to a slight double concave through the mid-section of the board, then to a concave vee through the fins. The sole purpose of this model is to absolutely shred.
Shortboards
When it comes to shortboard design, length, width, and thickness can sometimes not be enough to design a proper shortboard for you. So we’ve chosen to make our custom shortboards tailored through conversation to ensure each design element suites you just right.
